BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 23, 2009 –
Puerto Rico defeated Canada in straight sets
25-22, 25-23, 25-21 and remained tied with
Dominican Republic atop of Pool A in the NORCECA
Women’s Continental Championship. Both teams
have 2-0 record while Canada dropped to 0-2.
Aury Cruz paced Puerto Rico with 16 points
including 4 blocks and Sarai Alvarez and Tatiana
Encarnacion added 14 and 12 points respectively.
Tiffany Dodds was the only Canadian in double
figures charting 11 points and Tammy Mahon
tallied nine.
“We were a little bit anxious but it was good to
come from behind in every set”, said Vilmarie
Mojica, the captain of Puerto Rico. “Tomorrow we
have an important match against Dominican
Republic. Both teams know each other very well,
but we have changed our system and of course we
hope to win.”
“We succeeded handling the pressure of being
favorites today playing in front of our fans,”
said Carlos Cardona, the coach of Puerto Rico.
“I think tomorrow we will play better against
Dominican Republic being the underdog.”
“We were in front in the first two sets and
couldn’t finish each time,” said Tammy Mahon. “I
think that’s something you have to learn also
and this team is in a learning process.”
